What's New with 4H in Greene?  

4-H News— September 2011

horseGreene Horseshoes 4-H Club--Our next meeting will be Tuesday October 4 at 7 a.m. at the Greene County Extension Office. In addition to monthly meetings at office, we have stable meetings, weather permitting on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at Heavenly Sunshine Stables. Pet Club Fashion Revue4-H Pet Club--There will be no meetings in September. Join us Monday, October 3, as we start a new year. This club is for youth ages 9-19 interested in pet care and training and service to local animal charities. For more information call Rita Eppard at 434 -249-2730 or email b52omar@centurylink.net

globalGlobal Explorers--Discover a different country each Month! Explore each country’s language, music, dance and more! This club is open to all youth in grades 3 and up! Sessions are held on Mondays, from 3:15 – 5:00 at United Christian Academy starting September 19. Get cooking with 4-H! Join –Sign up for Youth Energized For Success! YES!

kid cookingWe offer fun new hands-on workshops for youth in grades 6-8 on Wednesdays—September 21— Apple Sauce, Preserves and more;

October 5—Food Safety; November 2—Mixing it up! Learn to make a variety of mixes that can be used for lots of great recipes; December 7—Gifts to share—homemade holiday gifts!

Meetings are held after school 3:30-6 p.m.

This is a monthly series of 4-H workshops designed to strengthen teens' and pre-teens’ life skills. Youth learn about healthy meals, comparison shopping, personal appearance, money management, entrepreneurship and more. It’s never too early to find the path to a great future!

At each meeting, youth will prepare a delicious and nutritious meal together!

Open to all youth in grades 6-8. Youth in grades 9-12 may request to become teen assistants. Call 434 985-5236 or email kalstat@vt.edu for more information.

recent program on India4-H International Club--Our next meeting is Tuesday, September 20, from 6:30-8 p.m. We will be celebrating National Hispanic Heritage Month. Each member is asked to bring something to share with the group about a Hispanic country—it can be a food, a song, a story, a dance, or other information. Call Kathy Alstat at 985-5236 or kalstat@vt.edu or email Tere Maldonado (teremaldonado@embarqmail.com). We are currently seeking adult volunteers and guest speakers to help us offer a variety of fun, experiential programs on a variety of countries around the world. Do you have photos, recipes, music or experiences to share with our local youth? Help build peace and understanding in Greene by encouraging our youth to learn more about their world! robot

Greene Robotics League —Our new season is underway with a team of 10 youth and several teen volunteers. No new members can be accepted at this time. We will be working on the 2011 Food Factor Challenge and will compete on November 3.

rabbitPoultry and Rabbit Club--Join our newest 4-H club! On Thursday, September 15, at 6:30 p.m., we will be discussing our recent embryology projects and learning about caring for young chicks. This fun and educational club is open to youth who will be at least 9 by September 30, 2011, but younger than 19, interested in raising rabbits, chickens, or other poultry birds. Blue Jay nestYoung Naturalists--will meet on Wednesdays, starting September 14 from 3:15-5:00 p.m. at Ruckersville Elementary. Join us for a nature hike as we learn about forestry and wild plants. We also will be working on a fall garden. Please wear long pants and closed -toed shoes. Please bring $2 to cover the cost of snack and supplies to each meeting. 4H Teen Club -- usually meets on the second Sunday of eacheating pancakes month from 5-7 p.m. Our next meeting is Sunday, September 11 at the Extension Office at 5 p.m. We will be electing officers and making plans for the coming year. All pancake breakfast ticket stubs are due at this meeting! Please make sure to stop by the Extension office and pick up some tickets to sell, if you have not already done so. All members are asked to sell tickets and sign up to work for our upcoming Pancake Breakfast at TGIFridays! Our goal is to have every member sell at least 5 tickets, which would mean approximately $500 for the club! We have ideas for some great projects and activities, including assisting with Special Olympics, sponsoring our annual December workshop for kids and some fun field trips, including a citizenship trip to Washington, D.C. We will learn our new date for camp in early September, so applications for 4-H Camp teen leaders and for 4-H Congress will be available starting at our September 11 meeting.

Greene County Fair4H Livestock Club--For more information about Livestock Club please call the Extension Office at 985-5236 or email Bryan Durrer at brylee7@msn.com or Tammy Durrer at tammydurrer@yahoo.com. Our next meeting is Sunday, September 11 at 2 p.m. in the William Monroe Middle School cafeteria. We will be discussing plans for the coming year. Parents are encouraged to come for a meeting while youth learn about parliamentary procedure.
