ANNA

An American Irish Rose

Anna Mae Hannigan Alexander 1927-2011Anna Mae reigns as Queen at 80

Anna Mae Hannigan Alexander

11.09.27 – 06.14.11

Anna Mae Hannigan Alexander, 83, of Newport News, VA was lifted by God to be with him in heaven and to reunite with her beloved Bob. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years Lt. Col. (ret) Robert M. Alexander; her mother and father, Anna and Jeremiah Hannigan; and her four brothers Robert, Milton, Emmett and Kenneth.

She is survived by her four children; Roberta Anne Carrier and husband Mick; Robert E. Alexander, II, wife Brenda and children Brittney, Bethany and Robert Paul; Arthur Alexander, wife Cathy and son Robert Hunter; daughter Charah Alexander and children, Anne Carter, Jack and William and relatives of the heart Dian Calderone and children Kathryn and Matthew and Scott Cloutier and family. Anna is also survived by her remaining sibling Jerry Hannigan and his family.

Anna was proud to be an American Irish Rose, a heritage that blessed her with an extraordinary sense of whimsy, astonishing creativity and fierce faith and love of family. She was an award-winning poet, writer, artist, gourmet cook and baker, fashion designer, seamstress and most notably a passionate wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend.

As a military wife, she traveled to many states and countries. In each location, she created loving homes for both family and friends made along the way. She diligently followed those friendships throughout her life and those whose lives are richer for knowing Anna are too numerous for counting.

Through example, she gifted her children with faith, courage, sense of fairness and duty, humor in adversity and love. Her family and friends will miss her intensely and treasure the best of moments spent in the embrace of her love.

The family invites you to a celebration of Anna’s life on Sunday, June 18, 2011, 2:00PM @ First Baptist Church, NN.

In accordance with Anna’s wishes, she will be cremated and laid to rest with her husband in Arlington National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anna’s name to the American Cancer Society.

Weymouth Funeral Home in Newport News is handling arrangements.
