Pearl

Like amber and coral, pearls are organic gemstones and must be treated with special care.  Pearls are relatively soft and should not be cleaned with anything but a soft, moist cloth. You should never put your pearls in an ultrasonic cleaner or use any abrasive substance or surface on them.

If you wear your pearls frequently, they will probably need washing after a year.  Pearls, especially those in settings or on a necklace, should be cleaned professionally.  At that time, the professional can also check for loose settings or cords.

Because pearls are organic, they are soft and porous and susceptible to chemicals, humidity and other substances.

Even your body oils and perspiration can diminish the luster of your pearls.  After wearing them, you should wipe them with a soft, moist (not damp or wet) cloth and lay them flat on a towel to dry before putting away.

Do not wear your pearls in the bath or shower or dip them in water since the wetness can damage and weaken the silk thread.  Pearls should not be exposed to intense sunlight (don't leave them in direct sunlight) or high temperatures as these may dry out and damage the pearl.

Avoid putting chemical substances on your body where you will be wearing pearls.  Put your pearls on last when dressing.  Take them off first.  You should even consider giving your pearls a periodic rest if you wear frequently.

Chemical substances that can harm pearls include cosmetics, hair sprays and other applications that stay in the hair, perfumes, alcohol and alcohol based products,  vinegar, fruit juice, detergents or cleaning products and ammonia, baking soda or bleach based products.

Like all gemstones, pearls should be stored separately form other pieces.  Metal settings and harder gems can scratch or fracture the surface of pearls.

Ideally, pearls should be stored in soft cloth, in a dark or dim place that is not too moist or too dry.  Plastic should not be used since it can hold moisture and emit chemicals.  Safes and banks are made to store papers which may be too dry for your pearls.

Pearl necklaces and bracelets should be stored flat to prevent the silk thread from stretching.

Pearls will change as they age but with proper care, they can last a lifetime and become more beautiful with each passing year.
