About Aquamarine

The March birthstone comes in varying hues of blue.  The name is derived from the Roman word for blue - "aqua" - and the Roman word for sea - "mare" - which is understandable since the blue colors of aquamarine reflect the many colors of seawater.

Aquamarine is a member of the beryl family.  The mineral beryl occurs in colors from clear to brightly hued and includes the gem emerald.

Aquamarine's hardness makes it very durable and resistant to scratches.  This makes it ideal for jewelry.  The stone is also known for its remarkable shine.

The gem is thought to help with coughs and colds, eyesight, hearing, quiet nerves and ease depression and help meditation and thinking  Healing properties include nerve pain, neck/jaw/tooth pain, and can relieve seasickness.

Care and Handling of Aquamarines

Like most good gemstones, aquamarine jewelry should take an annual visit to the jeweler for processional cleaning (more if worn a lot).

Don't use ultrasonic cleaners, photo from University of Nebraska/Lincoln toothpaste, alcohol or other chemicals to clean aquamarines.  Wipe with a soft 100% cotton cloth after wearing and, if dirty, some lukewarm water, a little mild soap and a clean 100% cotton cloth should clean the stone.

Always clean on a table away from sink or vents where the stone can fall and be irretrievable.

Like all good jewelry, pieces should be stored individually to protect from scratching.  Keep away from sunlight and extreme temperatures.
