About
Aquamarine |
The
March
birthstone
comes in
varying
hues of
blue.
The name
is
derived
from the
Roman
word for
blue -
"aqua" -
and the
Roman
word for
sea -
"mare" -
which is
understandable
since
the blue
colors
of
aquamarine
reflect
the many
colors
of
seawater.
Roman's
believed
the
stone
was
sacred
to
Neptune,
god of
the sea.
Sailors
wore the
stone,
often
inscribed
with an
image of
Neptune,
as
talismans
to
protect
them
from the
dangers
of the
sea.
Aquamarine
is a
member
of the
beryl
family.
The
mineral
beryl
occurs
in
colors
from
clear to
brightly
hued and
includes
the gem
emerald.
Naturally,
aquamarine
occurs
in
colors
ranging
from a
pale sky
blue to
a darker
blue-green.
The
bluer
the
stone,
the more
valuable
with a
deep,
rich
aqua
being
the most
desirable.
Aquamarine's
hardness
makes it
very
durable
and
resistant
to
scratches.
This
makes it
ideal
for
jewelry.
The
stone is
also
known
for its
remarkable
shine. |

Care and
Handling
of
Aquamarines |
Like
most
good
gemstones,
aquamarine
jewelry
should
take an
annual
visit to
the
jeweler
for
processional
cleaning
(more if
worn a
lot).
Don't
use
ultrasonic
cleaners,
toothpaste,
alcohol
or other
chemicals
to clean
aquamarines.
Wipe
with a
soft
100%
cotton
cloth
after
wearing
and, if
dirty,
some
lukewarm
water, a
little
mild
soap and
a clean
100%
cotton
cloth
should
clean
the
stone.
Always
clean on
a table
away
from
sink or
vents
where
the
stone
can fall
and be
irretrievable.
Like
all good
jewelry,
pieces
should
be
stored
individually
to
protect
from
scratching.
Keep
away
from
sunlight
and
extreme
temperatures.
