It was the time every student waits for – summer vacation. Though I lived far from the ocean’s shore, I joined with thousands of swooning, hearts pounding, prepubescent girls as we followed the television adventures and antics of Gidget, Moon Doggie and the Big Kahuna. If that weren’t exciting enough, the movies were filled with nubile young women and bronzed-bodied young men taking to the surf and sand with Annette and Frankie in many iconic and other less memorable “beach” movies. A musical sojourn with the everlasting Beach Boys’ CD Best of the Beach Boys is a chance to dip your toes down by the waves of memory beach. Sing along with many of your baby boomer favorites and remember a time when bikinis covered the navel, letterman was a sweater not a late-night host and every rebellious teen wanted to grab a board, “borrow” the keys to their parents’ woodie and drive to the beach were they could hang ten riding the big wave. Best of the Beach Boys is bonfires-by-the-shore bliss the way you remember it and probably not the way it was. But those boomer memories are great. This is the perfect music to get you into the summertime spirit. Although it doesn’t feature all of my favorites, it does include I Get Around, Surfin’ U.S.A. and the quintessential surf’s up tune – Good Vibrations. This is not music to listen to quietly and, unless you are a better driver than I, probably not a good CD to drive by. (Why Office, I have no idea how fast I was going, I was just enjoying the great weather and groovin’ to the Beach Boys and I will be more careful in the future.) So, get out your Hawaiian shirts, kick off your flip flops and teach
someone really young the best way to dance the swim. You may be
only young once but no one says how long once has to be.
