animated music staffMusic Review - Over Easy a grand slam for the Warmed Over Boys

By Alex Carrier
cd cover for Over Easy
The title is Over Easy but the effect is a satisfying menu of music. This new cd by local group Warmed Over Boys is sure to leave listeners feeling both satiated and wanting more.

Fans of the Boys will recognize the uniquely eclectic blend of musical styles that makes their music so listenable. No matter your mood or musical preference there is something on this cd to please everyone and even offer some new musical favorites.

A six-pack of the dozen songs featured on the album are originals from Boys duo Gary Burnette and Tom Evans. Even here you can see the unique style of the group with a glimpse into the individual talent of each artist.

Tom EvansEvans’ I’m Goin’ Home is a great opener for the album. The quick picking rhythms of banjo and guitar get hands clapping and toes tapping. Evans second fast piece Kick, Your Heels Up, Sally gives the duo another chance to show off their picking talents and vocal harmonies.

It is Evans’ more reflective compositions Quiet Time and English Garden however, that display a lyrical, sometimes poignant quality. Words weave evocative visions of the good life and the listener is enticed to become part of the image.

While Quiet Time is more folksy, it is English Garden that betrays the duo’s love of the Beatles musical styles. Perhaps is the soft moan of the bass or delicate strumming of the banjo reminiscent of the Beatles Yellow Submarine. There is the hint of something unexpected in the melody. I can picture Alice strolling through Wonderland and I want to walk with her. Truly, Evan’s best on this cd.

Gary BrunetteBrunette’s first composition Rainbow in My Backyard is one of the most positive songs I have heard in too long a time. The music is lively and the lyrics enlivening. As an obnoxious optimist, I can’t help but love the message and long to hear it played again and played out by others.

Not Crazy Enough, Brunette’s second original cut is a rollicking, suggestively rowdy, tune perfectly expressive of Brunette’s quirky personality. If you have ever had the good luck to see the Boys in live concert, this song is exactly what you would expect from the delightfully eccentric Burnette and you are happy to hear it.

There are some fine arrangements of others’ tunes to round out the album but for me listening to Over Easy was like having a meal at Chinese restaurant. I love the food, enjoy the experience, leave filling satisfied but a few hours later, I am hungry for more.
