Music Review - Make a Joyful Noise animated music staff

By Alex Carrieralbum cover for Handel's Messiah Highlights
(A review of music to lift the spirit.)

For every season there is a song, music transforming sound into an experience uplifting to the spirit. Here are three of my personal choices for this Easter season and for every time you want to transcend daily life.

The range is as far apart as you can get. The first choice feature symphony and chorus performing Handel’s classic Messiah.

The second two albums feature voices only. The Acapella Project and Acapella Project II by Glad showcase both classical hymns and modern gospel in interpretations giving them a fresh sound.

Handel’s Messiah (highlights) by the Oratorio Society of New York picks some of the best solos and choruses from perhaps one of the most familiar classical sacred pieces.

This selection of highlights includes most of my favorites “And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed”, “The people that walked in darkness”, “He shall feed his flock” and, of course, “The Hallelujah Chorus”.

When time is spent listening to talented artists raise voices and instruments in joyful noise, it is impossible to not feel your own spirit lifted upward.

The unusual and contemporary interpretations of well-known (and less familiar) songs leads the listener on a journey through the heart and soul. Even a non-singer will want to sing along and share the experience to its fullest.

Both of these albums will sooth your spirit in times of sorrow and distress and highlight days of joy. album cover accapella project 2

My favorite tracks on the first album include
“In the First Light”, “Be Thou My Vision” and “Can It Be.”

The second album is my Easter pick with new musical insights into the classic hymns “Crown Him with Many Crowns”, “Christ the Lord Is Risen Today” and “All Glory Laud and Honor”.

Whether you pick one of these albums or another that brings joy to your spirit, find the music that speaks to your heart for this and each season of the year.
