Sylvia Arotlin Lingle
Sylvia Arotlin Lingle, 91, of Orange, VA died on
Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at Dogwood Village
Senior Living. She was born on February 3, 1920 in
Chicago, IL to the late Louis Arotlin and Rose
Schenk Arotlin.
Sylvia was married for 58 years to her late husband,
Van, who was a naval officer and pilot. They had
four children. She loved being a Navy wife. While
stationed in Africa, Sylvia took advantage of the
opportunities for traveling it afforded her. Like
her mother, Sylvia was a Red Cross volunteer in
Africa. She continued to travel throughout her life
visiting Russia and China.
Sylvia was an avid duplicate bridge player and
played weekly until she was 90. She ran a duplicate
bridge club for many years in Alexandria, Virginia.
Sylvia was a lover of all animals. She always had a
dog by her side and has chosen to have her beloved
dog “Prissy’s” cremated remains buried with her.
She is survived by her children, Van A. Lingle III
and his wife, Marsha of Chester, SC, Judy Chunyo and
her husband, Dennis of Little Rock, AR, Susan
McKenzie and her husband, James of Mitchells, VA and
Stephen L. Lingle of Thornburg, VA.
Additional survivors include her grandchildren,
Nathan Chunyo, Gitana Chunyo Pinos, Stephen Lingle,
Pamela Moore, step-grandchildren Wendy Sattler and
Carolina Eldridge. She also had two great
grandchildren, Anna Moore and Alexander Moore as
well as a great step-grandchild Nicholas Rodriquez.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death
by her husband, Van A. Lingle II; and her brother,
Harry Arotlin.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, January
23, 2012 at 2 p.m. at
Culpeper National Cemetery
with Pastor
Jojuan White officiating.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be
made in her name to the Lake of the Woods Fire
Department, 104 Lakeview Parkway Locust Grove, VA
22508.
