From May
18, 2008 to June 1, 2008
Virginia is participating
in the Click It or Ticket
campaign to help save
lives.
Many
people believe they are
safe without a seat belt
but an officer once said
to me "I have never
unbuckled a fatality."
So,
don't worry about getting
an extra ticket if you
are stopped and aren't
wearing your seatbelt.
Worry that not wearing
your seat belt may be one
of the last mistakes you
make.

Enforcement Mobilization
Aims to Increase Seat
Belt Use
From May 18, 2008 to
June 1, 2008 law
enforcement across
Virginia and the nation
work to increase seat
belt use with the
Click It or Ticket
enforcement mobilization
in an effort to save more
lives on Virginia’s
roadways.
According to
preliminary numbers from
DMV: The Virginia Highway
Safety Office, there were
1,026 fatalities in
Virginia in 2007. Of
those, 749 fatalities
occurred in vehicles that
were equipped with safety
restraints. 452 or 60% of
the 749 fatalities were
not wearing restraints.
Law enforcement will
be out in force ticketing
all motorists that are
violating traffic laws in
Virginia with a
particular emphasis being
placed on lack of seat
belt and child safety
seat use. Special
checkpoints and other
stepped up law
enforcement activities
will be conducted during
the Mobilization May 18 -
June 1, 2008.
Please remember,
buckle up every one,
every ride. Click It or
Ticket.”

What are the facts about
seat-belt use?
Click
It or Ticket is a
high visibility
enforcement program
designed to raise safety
belt usage and save
people from death and
serious injury on the
streets and highways.
The Click It or
Ticket campaign is
currently used in 18
other states and the
District of Columbia. In
other Click It or Ticket
campaigns, the occupant
restraint usage rate
increased by more than 10
percent, meaning that
thousands of previously
unbuckled drivers and
passengers began using
safety belts and child
safety seats.
Following the May 2007
Click It or Ticket
campaign, Virginia's
statewide safety belt
compliance rate is
currently 79.9 percent.
The goal of 2007 Click
It or Ticket was to
raise the rate to at
least 82 percent.
