Habitat for Humanity Opportunities

Habitat in Greene
Jesse Straight, Volunteer Coordinator, 434-293-9066
and contributing author and photographer

habitat for humanity site crewBuilder Blitz is starting this Saturday!  We still need help with traffic control.  We are working from Sat June 3 to Sat June 10 from 7am to 7pm.  The days are broken into 4 hour shifts: 7am to 11am, 11am to 3pm, and 3pm to 7pm.  We still need people for all shifts, especially for the 3pm to 7pm shifts and on Sunday June 4.  (Lunch will be provided.)  Let me know if you can help.

Want to Volunteer?  Please let me know.  We would love your help.

If you are interested in construction volunteering this is where we can use people with or without any skill.  Let me know if you are interested.

1.  Any Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday--place and tasks change from week to week, refer to weekly schedule below.  (Usually must be 16 or older).

2.  Any Saturday after June 11 in Cville or Greene.

Want to go on a Habitat Tour?
I would like to include any interested community members on a Habitat Tour.  On the tour we will see and discuss the past, present, and future of Habitat.  This is a good way to get the big picture of Habitat.  A sandwich lunch is provided in the office where we will talk about some of Partner Families and how Habitat works.  Then everyone jumps in the Habitat Tour Van and we go around to some of the past houses and present and future building sites.  The Van time is a good Q and A time.  These tours usually take an hour--around noon to 1:00.  Let me know if you are interested in doing this and if the following time is good for you:

Friday June 16, 12:00-1:00habitat for humanity site

Habitat is looking for AmeriCorps Construction Supervisors

We are looking for AmeriCorps (like Peace Corps, except domestic and only a one year commitment) Construction Supervisors for this coming year (August 2006 to August 2007).  No construction experience is necessary.  AmeriCorps Construction Supervisors learn how to build houses and thoughtfully lead volunteers.  Please let me know if you know anyone who would be interested.

Teacher and Professor Summer Help

In the summer we have a decrease in volunteers with most UVa students being out town.  As part of a plan to mitigate this problem, I would like to make a special effort to invite any teachers or professors who might have more free time during the summer.  Please help me get the word out.  Thanks.

Special Needs and Projects

1.  We need more Midweek Construction Volunteers: Wed, Thur, Fri, 9am to 3:30.  No time commitment.  No skills necessary.

2.  Providing lunches for our Saturday volunteers in Greene County.

3. This June 3 to June 10 is Builders Blitz.  Professional builders and architects are gathering in the community to build 6 houses in that one week.  For such an event there will be much activity--builders, building suppliers, media, spectators.  The job site will be active from around 6am to 9pm.  We will need people to help control the traffic.  Can you let me know if you would be willing to sign up for a shift of traffic control?

4.  Financial Tracker--at least mediocre skill with excel (bonus: familiar with building supplies), 20 hours start up, 4 hours/week, assign values to donated building supplies, track building supplies buying.

5.  On Site Saturday Volunteer Coordinators--welcome and sign in Saturday volunteers on Saturday mornings (commitment is 8:30 to 9:30).  I will train you with everything you need to know.

6.  Vehicle Maintenance- someone to make sure that the vehicles are all receiving routine scheduled maintenance, repairs, inspections, and that the papers are all up to date. Practically, this means shuttling vehicles to the shop once needs are determined, or doing repairs if the person is capable and available. They can consult with Ken, construction supervisor, regarding vehicle needs.

7.  Tool Maintenance- Marking, inventorying, lubricating tools. Repairing damaged plugs, nicked cords, etc. Taking tools to the shop for serious repairs. Ken, construction supervisor, can train you for this task; you don't have to be an expert.

8.  Midweek Crew Photographer--stop by the job site at least once a week to take some digital photos of the Midweek Crew

9.  We need to get the word out about all of these needs: TV, radio, church newsletters, etc.
