A message from Don Pamenter of STAR - June 4, 2006

Hi all,

As many of you will know, we have received a Community Development Block Grant to help us develop a master plan for the revitalization of Stanardsville. This is a small grant that will be increased if we show a high level of community need and public interest. We need your support.

DHCD set some challenging requirements that must be accomplished before June 30 (they originally set a deadline for May 22, but we didn’t receive the letter until late April and so appealed for a postponement).

The five major preliminary requirements include:

Hold a public meeting to generate support for the planning process.

Designate individuals who will become a “management team” for the planning process, and then meet with them.

Prepare preliminary assessments of area assets/needs: housing; infrastructure (e.g. sewer, water and utilities), and buildings with potential commercial use.

Retain a skilled facilitator to help with the next phases of the planning process.

Report on our accomplishment of these requirements.

If we perform well on these, DHCD may give us more money to support our planning activities, and possibly fund development of an application for a major grant.

We have set June 8th as the first public meeting (7pm at the Town Hall). Please see the attached flyer. We placed an ad in the Greene County Record, which I hope you all noticed. We also had a booth at Saturday’s Strawberry Festival, where we promoted the meeting (by-the-way, the Festival was a wonderful success for Greene and Stanardsville!). We will be placing posters in the local stores this week. Please do your best to attend this preliminary planning session.

We have also identified some of the people who we would like to become part of the management team.

Finally, we have retained a skilled facilitator with great experience in the DHCD processes – Bill Wanner from the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission.

I was delighted by the response to *STAR* at the Strawberry Festival. During the period between 8 am and 3 pm, there were seldom more than a couple of minutes when no one was looking at our display and asking questions. The response was overwhelming positive. People want to improve Stanardsville! It is up to us to turn interest into participation, participation into plans, and plans into reality.

Your ideas and support will make a difference. Please do everything you can to arrange you schedule to attend. DHCD will consider the level of community support, as evidenced by attendance at public meetings, when they decide the full grant they will approve.

Best regards,

Don Pamenter
