In Others' Words

On Saturday, April 18, the unthinkable happened when my beloved husband David died suddenly of heart failure at our home. If this tragedy had to happen, then my son Davis and I were fortunate to be living in the best place we could be under the circumstances—Greene County. When my husband collapsed on the lawn, neighbors immediately tended to him, giving him CPR until the Rescue Squad arrived. Friends and neighbors stayed with us while the EMTs worked on my husband, spending an incredible amount of time doing all they could to revive him. The news of what happened quickly spread, and within a short time, many friends and other community members began calling and showing up with food and other items. We can’t begin to thank all those who responded so quickly and so compassionately, from my son’s soccer coaches who left the middle of a game to be by our sides and later finished the yard work my husband had not completed, to neighbors who encircled us with love and prayers on our front lawn. One neighbor sat and held my hand during the entire incident and returned the next morning to drive me to church.

Davis and I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers of so many people. I would not be exaggerating to state that hundreds of people visited us during the visitation at Ryan Funeral Home and for the funeral service at my church in Charlottesville the following evening. Some of Davis’ teenaged friends showed up both nights, a remarkable expression of love and support from such young people. I am also grateful to the folks at Ryan Funeral Home, who were so kind, understanding, and compassionate during this difficult time. They guided me through this difficult and emotional process and were with me every step of the way.

Our lives will be forever changed by this tragic loss, but one thing that will not change is our love and appreciation for our wonderful friends and loving community. We are truly blessed to live in Greene County.

With much appreciation,

Pauline Hovey
