Sea Tells
by Alex Carrier A dead bird.
A beer can.
A syringe.
A plastic bag.
A soda bottle.
A mutilated fish.
I went down to the sea today
To search among the coves and dunes
To race the tide and comb the beaches
To see what I might find.
A broken shell, edges smoothed by waves.
A crab peeking out from his home in the sand.
A piece of broken glass tumbled into a gem.
Rows of seaweed, torn and tossed aside by angry waters.
Seagulls bickering over bits of sea-strewn debris.
I went down to the sea today
To search among the coves and dunes
To race the tide and comb the beaches
But those were things from another time
When I went down to the sea to find.
